I am back with some good info on the last name Cannon. Back in September of 2008 we published the family crest of the last name Cannon. And since then two visitors have contributed detailed information for those of you that are trying to find your origins. Hopefully, this information will help you connect the dots.

I don’t have much information on the Cannon family, but know that I am a descendant of Jeremiah Cannon, who originated from County Cork Ireland. He would be my great Great Grandfather, and is buried in the St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetary in McGregor, Iowa. One of his Daughters married my great grandfather, Mark C Young, who is also buried in St. Mary’s. I don’t really know any more about the family history, other than he was the first generation of Cannon in his family to make it to the U.S.

The Cannons are descended from two of Ireland’s most renowned Kings: Conn of the Hundred Battles and Niall of the Nine Hostages. The O’Cannons have been described as “Ancient Princes of Tir Connaill” and “Valiant Chiefs”. However their 350 year dynasty in Tir Connaill ended in 1250. Their ancient territory would seem to have been Tir Aeda (now the barony of Tirhigh) after the deaths of Rory O’ Canannain and his son Niall O’Canannain in 1250, the sept declined greatly in power. Brian O’Neill died ten years later in 1260, he had supported an O’Canannain claimant to Tir Conaill i.e. to the Kingdom of Tir Conaill (Tirconnell). The personal name Canannain is a diminutive of Cano meaning ‘wolf cub’. Canannain was fifth in descent from Flaithbertach mac Loingsig (died 765), high-king of Ireland; they were the descendants of Neill of the Nine Hostages (Irish: Niall Noigiallach) who died c. 405 A.D. by his son, Conall Gulban who gave his name to Tir Conaill, the Land of Conall, now County Donegal.

Ui Canannain was the ancestral name of the Cannons and Tir Connaill (all of County Donegal and part of County Londonderry) was the “Land of the Cannons”. By the early 1600s the name Ui Canannain had been anglicised to O’Cannon. Further anglicisation took place during the Penal laws in the late 1700s and early 1800s and the name in County Donegal became Cannon. In the early 1880s there were just 200 families bearing the Cannon surname living in County Donegal, who were mainly tenant farmers. The Cannons/O’Canannains, were of the ancient sept of Cenell Conaill, a branch of the northern Ui Neill and descend from Ruaidri ua Canannain (died 30 November 950 A.D.) King of Cenel Conaill, and grandson of Canannain, who flourished in the second half of the ninth century. One of Neill’s most famous descendants was George Washington, the first President of the United States of America. The site of the ancient seat of the O’Canannains was near Letterkenny the largest town of County Donegal, which is said on good authority to represent the hillside of the O’Cannons (English translation).

Last name of Galician origin, according to the legend, this last5 name descends from the princes of Troya. One of their ancestral houses was the village of Noya, in the Coruña. Don García Rodrigo de Caamaño, gentleman of Rubianes and Villagarcía, funded the mayorazgo of the House of Rubianes in February 4, 1535. don Mauro de Mendoza Sotomayor y Caamaño was member of this family. He was created Viscount of Barrantes in December 13, 1654 and marquis of Villagarcía in March 7, 1655. In March 8 of 1761 he was granted the first class of Greatness of Spain to the House of Villagarcía as long it was united to the dominion of Rubianes.

Don Jacobo Caamaño y Gayoso, native of Santiago de Compostela, joined the Ordrn of Montesa in 1791. In the same year, don Juan Miguel Caamaño Magellan, native of Vigo, joined the Order of Carlos’ III . don Vicente Caamaño Gayoso (1726); don Ramón Caamaño (1747), native of Santiago of Compostela, and don José Caamaño (1775) also native of Santiago of Compostela joined the Order of San Juan from Jerusalem. Don Antonio Caamaño and Gayoso, native of Santiago of Compostela, proved his nobility, in 1752 in order to join the Real Company of Marine Guards.

The title, Marquis’s of Real House was granted to don Francisco García de Huidobro in 1760. This title was granted once again in 1915 by doña Teresa Pastoriza Caamaño y Márquez de la Plata, lady of the Real Maestranza of Zaragoza.

The following were protective-presidents of the Real Body of the Nobility of Catalonia: don Francisco Javier de Despujol y de Pons, Baron of Monclair (1767); don José de Despujol, IV Count of Fonollar (1852), and don Ignacio de Despujol, V Marquis of Palmerola (1863 and 1880). The following joined the Real Body of the Nobility of Catalonia: don José de Despujol y Ricart, Marquis of Palmerola (1918); don Ignacio de Despujol y Sabater (1924), and don Eulogio de Despujol y Reynoso, Baron of the Castle of Burjasenia (1924). Don Francisco Javier de Despujol y de Alemany-Descatllar became Marquis of Palmerola in April 7, 1767. Don Eulogio Despujol Dusay y Ferrer de San Jordi, became Count of Caspe in December 24, 1878. Vasco last name of Eibar (Guipúzcoa). Don Francisco de Eguren Egastizábal, native of Eibar, joined Santiago’s Order in 1622. Don José de Azcárate y Eguren was baptized in Anzuola in March 22 of 1770, He proved his nobility in Cádiz in 1781 in order to pass to Indias. Doña Magdalena de Eguren married don Nicolás Antonio de Madariaga Inurrigaro. He was baptized in Vergara April 27 of 1638, also, he became knight of Santiago in 1664. They had a son, don Andrés de Madariaga y Eguren, baptized in Vergara, December 5 of 1657. Doña Teresa de Eguren married don Pedro de Madariaga Salogüen in Vergara. From this union, don Franciaco de Madariaga y Eguren was born. He was baptized in Vergara and married in December 4 of 1690 with doña Ana de Mayora. Their offspring, don Francisco Antonio de Madariagay Mayora was baptized in Vergara in February 2 of 1725. He acquired nobility in Anzuola in 1773. Don Pedro de Eguren, nativeof Vergara, married doña María de Unda native of Ermua. They had a daughter, doña Teresa de Eguren, and she married don Santiago de Izaguirre Maiztegui. Their first-born, don Mateo de Izaguirre y Eguren was baptized in Ermua, September 26 of 1718. He was created Count of Izaguirre de Santana and Viscount of Eguren in July 16 1769. Don Andrés Eguren, native of Vergara, married doña María Ignacia de Ugalde. They had a daughter, doña Sebastiana de Eguren. She marriage don Andrés de Guiridi y Zaldúa. They had a daughter, doña María Ana Guiridi y Eguren and she married don Domingo de Aguirre. He was baptized in Lagazpia in February 8 of 1752. He proved his nobility of his four last names in the Real Chancillería of Valladolid in 1794.

In a manuscript that stored in Torre de Tombo en Lisboa, is said that in the house of the Counts of Villaflor a medal was stored, coined about twenty centuries ago in Rome in memory of don Nuño de Faría. According to some genealogists this last name comes from Oferina, between Barceló and Faón. It is known that Tomás de Faría accompanied Count don Enrique de Borgoñain, founder of the Portuguese Monarchy to the Crusades,
